Thou Art Here Theatre is launching our inaugural Write Here Immersive Playwright’s Unit. This unit will support the development of three new immersive theatre plays by Edmonton playwrights. Each playwright will meet individually with a collaborator/dramaturg throughout the year as they develop the first draft of a new work. Each playwright will also receive a weeklong workshop with a creative team and the option of a public staged reading of their play.
We believe immersive theatre has the power to highlight communities, locations, and landmarks. Our hope is that these plays will shine a light on special parts of our city through the eyes of these playwrights.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Monday, February 20, 2023
Timeline:
- March-October, 2023: Writing period, meeting regularly with a collaborator and producer
- November 20 – December 10, 2023: one week-long workshop within this timeframe, culminating in a staged reading
Rate: Total of $2500
ABOUT THOU ART HERE THEATRE
Thou Art Here is an artist-driven theatre collective creating audience-engaged immersive experiences. We live and present stories in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) on Treaty 6 territory on Turtle Island. Our calling is to make theatre in unexpected places, in unexpected ways, for and about the people who are here. We will do this through developing cyclical processes for diversity, inclusion, and sustainability. Our work is based on forming ensembles grounded in the values of collaboration, community, and innovation. We aim for our theatre to be authentically and intentionally Edmontonian.
Founded in 2011, incorporated as a non profit in 2021, Thou Art Here is launching its most ambitious season ever in 2023. We are no longer dedicated just to the work of William Shakespeare and are thrilled to be presenting 3 unique projects and supporting 5 Edmonton based playwrights/creators.
ABOUT THE POSITION
- Work to develop a play over the course of 2023;
- Meet regularly with a dramaturg/collaborator;
- Work with the producer to put on a staged reading of the work
- Work within a team-based environment to achieve agreed upon goals and timelines.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- Pitch us an idea! In whatever format represents you best (cover letter, video, drawing, etc). This doesn’t necessarily have to be the one you choose to work on in the playwrights’ unit. We are looking for works that:
- highlight Edmonton in a unique way; and
- are an immersive theatre experience (theatre that engages the audience and/or the space, often takes place outside of a theatre and invites the audience to be a part of the play).
- Remember, Thou Art Here is no longer a Shakespeare company. Your idea does not have to be Shakespeare related 😉
- Resume that outlines your area(s) of artistic practice.
